Traditional and new economies drive Nevada-Canada ties

Every year more than 1.7 million Canadians visit Nevada’s tourist attractions — from the Las Vegas strip to the Grand Canyon. And they spend roughly $1.4 million a year. Some of the top entertainment in Las Vegas is also Canadian, including Celine Dion and Cirque du Soleil. And Canada’s two main airlines — WestJet and Air Canada – help deliver tourists to the state.

Gold was the lure that brought settlers to the state in the mid-19th century. And more than 170 years later mining is still an important industry in the “Silver State.” Nevada leads the U.S. in production of silver, gold, and mercury. Several Canadian mining companies have operations in the state, including Barrick Gold, Nevada Clean Magnesium, West Kirkland Mining and NuLegacy Gold. Canadian-owned mining companies employ more than 5,000 Nevadans.

Canadians are the largest foreign employers and direct investors in Nevada. Across all sectors, Canadian-owned businesses employ about 9,000 people in the state. Among the major employers are Barrick, Air Canada, WestJet, Mitel and Telus International.

Leveraging artificial and human intelligence to enhance customer support 

TELUS International, a unit of Vancouver-based communications company TELUS Corp., operates three major customer experience, or CX, support centres in the U.S. The largest of them is the Las Vegas center, which has 1,000 seats and 100,000 sq. ft. of space. TELUS offers a wide range of customer support functions for corporate clients. It also designs, builds and delivers online customer solutions for global brands.

TELUS recently bulked up both its human and artificial intelligence capacity to support its U.S. operations. The company has vastly expanded its ability to do online content moderation to help corporate customers shield their brands from fake reviews, copyright infringement, false news and disturbing content. Telus teams of “digital first responders” are committed to keeping companies and individuals safe in the digital world.

In 2021, TELUS International acquired India-based Playment, a data annotation and computer vision company. Among other benefits, computer vision technology is being used to improve health care diagnostics, reduce banking fraud and enhance visual search features in e-commerce applications.
